Who and when started the company Spilva?
Spilva brand was founded back on 10th August 1992 when a new company, named Spilva, started working at a cannery workshop of Bulduri state owned farm. The brand and the company were founded by Lolita Bemhena and Jānis Āboliņš. In 2004, Spilva became a part of Orkla group.
Which were the first products Spilva produced?
In the beginning there were 2 production lines at the cannery workshop: the 1st line was producing juices and drinks (in 3 liters jars); the 2nd line was producing horseradishes. In 1992 Spilva started to produce pickled cucumbers and tomatoes. In 1994 Spilva started to produce tomato sauce and ketchup, in 1996 Spilva started to produce jam, in 1997 Spilva started to produce mayonnaise and dressings. With every year Spilva has expanded and keeps expanding its range of products.
What foods and food products are offered by Spilva?
Currently Spilva offers ten categories of food and food additives: tomato sauce and ketchup, mayonnaise, dressings, preserved vegetables, horseradish and mustard, soups and main courses, jams, desserts and syrups.
How do new products and new recipes by Spilva come about?
Step 1. When Spilva specialists have conducted market studies finding out the latest trends and people’s wishes, our technologists get to work. New products are developed preparing at first samples at the company’s new product laboratory.
Step 2. The next step is to taste the laboratory product in the meeting of new products development. If the participants of the meeting give a positive evaluation of the product, an extensive tasting is carried out to assess the taste, aroma, and visual appearance of the product and it is given a mark on the scale of 1 to 5.
Step 3. If the product receives a good evaluation it gets presented in the meeting of directors. If it receives a good evaluation in the meeting of directors, as well, an experimental or test run of the product is produced.
Step 4. The product of the test run is taken home in order to gather as many impartial comments as possible. At the same time the quality indicators and the term of validity of the product is examined.
Step 5. If the comments regarding the product have been positive and the results of testing its quality and the term of validity are good the product is prepared to be launched in the market.
Do Spilva products comply with international quality standards?
Spilva has been granted a certificate issued by Orkla Group that complies with Food safety standards of Orkla and that is established on the basis of BRC (British Retail Consortium) food safety standards. Spilva and Orkla Foods Latvija are also concerned about the company’s impact on the surrounding environment. The company has implemented its own environment, health and safety standard, Orkla EHS (Environment, Health and Safety), strictly complying with international standard ISO 14001 (Standard for Environmental Management) and OHSAS 18001 (Standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management). Moreover, products by Spilva comply with the highest quality standards for export where products manufactured by foreign companies must meet especially high standards.
How does processing of fruit and vegetables facilitate their preservation for a longer period of time?
Preservation of fruit, berries, and vegetables is achieved in the same way as canning them at home – by the processes of pasteurizing and sterilizing. Some products are supplemented with preservatives in order to protect them from microorganisms and to extent their duration. However, a range of products contain no preservatives in such a case they are labeled “No preservatives”.
Why are E numbers added to the products?
E numbers or food additives have made it possible to expand the range of products and there are several reasons why they are added: to preserve the food value of products; to ensure the customers receive the necessary composition (especially, if products are meant for consumers with special requirements, for example, sugar diabetes, etc); to extent their duration and stability of products, as well as to improve the quality of taste.
What is the difference between preservatives and concentrates?
Preservatives are food additives that extend the duration of products and protect them from damaged caused by microorganisms.
Fruit juice concentrates are fruit juice that has its natural amount of water reduced, usually by evaporation. To make fruit juice out of the concentrate it needs to have so much water added as previously was taken away.

Yes, it is possible to purchase Spilva products in wholesale by concluding a cooperation agreement with Orkla Foods Latvija. In addition, it is possible to purchase Spilva products both in wholesale and retail packs at the Spilva store – 1 Zvaigznu, Spilve, Babite parish, Latvia.

Does Spilva export its products?
The Spilva products are exported to various Western and Eastern countries. Our export markets include the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Great Britain, Ireland, Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine and other countries. In some of the countries, our products are sold under the brand Spilva, but in other countries – under locally recognized names.
Where Spilva products are made?
Most of Spilva product categories are made at Orkla Foods Latvija production facility in Spilve, Babite district. This is where we produce our tomato sauces, mayoresses, dressings, horseradish, mustard, salads, sorrel, grey peas, apple puree, syrups, sweet sauces, and other products. A part of Spilva products are specially ordered from Orkla group production facilities or other factories certified by Orkla outside Latvia.
Who owns Spilva brand?
In 2004, Spilva was incorporated in Orkla group. Back in 2015, Spilva and Gutta were merged into one company – Orkla Foods Latvija. Whereas in 2019 Orkla market share was consolidated by merging Orkla Foods Latvija and Orkla Confectionery & Snacks Latvija into one organization under the name of Orkla Latvija.

Spilva and Orkla Foods Latvika participate in various support programmes and measures, prioritizing projects for children, education and health. We have supported such organizations as the Latvian Children’s Fund, Latvian Orphans’ Fund, Grobina Large Family Association “Dzērvītes”, Family Association “Dzirkstelīte”, City of Jelgava Large Family Centre “Spiets” and others. Spilva brand has participated in many school and university projects, book donations within Friendly Appeal Day and other significant and education-oriented projects.
