1.   Who and when started the company Spilva?

The company Spilva was established in August 10, 1992 on the base of a cannery workshop of Bulduri state owned farm. The company was started by Lolita Bemhena and Janis Abolins.

2.   Which were the first products Spilva produced?

I the beginning there were 2 production lines at the cannery workshop: the 1st line was producing juices and drinks (in 3 liters jars); the 2nd line was producing horseradishes. In 1992 Spilva started to produce pickled cucumbers and tomatoes. In 1994 Spilva started to produce tomato sauce and ketchup, in 1996 Spilva started to produce jam, in 1997 Spilva started to produce mayonnaise and dressings. With every year Spilva has expanded and keeps expanding its range of products.

3.   What kinds of food and food additives does Spilva produce?

Currently Spilva offers ten categories of food and food additives:

  • tomato sauce and ketchup;
  • mayonnaise;
  • dressings;
  • preserved vegetables;
  • jams and desserts;
  • horse radish and mustard;
  • soups and main courses;
  • juices;
  • teas;
  • spices.

 

4.   How do new products and new recipes by Spilva come about?

Step 1. New products are created by first preparing samples in the laboratory of the company for new products.
Step 2. The next step is to taste the laboratory product in the meeting of new products development. If the participants of the meeting give a positive evaluation of the product, an extensive tasting is carried out to assess the taste, aroma, and visual appearance of the product and it is given a mark on the scale of 1 to 5.
Step 3. If the product receives a good evaluation it gets presented in the meeting of directors. If it receives a good evaluation in the meeting of directors, as well, an experimental or test run of the product is produced.
Step 4. The product of the test run is taken home in order to gather as many impartial comments as possible. At the same time the quality indicators and the term of validity of the product is examined.
Step 5. If the comments regarding the product have been positive and the results of testing its quality and the term of validity are good the product is prepared to be launched in the market.

5.   Do Spilva products comply with international quality standards?

Spilva has been granted a certificate issued by Orkla Group that complies with Food safety standards of Orkla and that is established on the basis of BSC (British Retail Consortium) food safety standards. The company also strives to be environment-friendly. For example, Spilva ranked 6th in the competition between 150 companies in the nomination “The Greenest Company in 2008” of the Top Reputation Latvian Companies.
Spilva quality standards are defined by the fact that the company is incorporated in the international group of companies Orkla which follows the highest level of quality standards. Another evidence of Spilva’s compliance with the highest level of quality standards can be seen in the fact that Spilva is exporting its products to the neighboring countries of Finland and Russia that have set especially high quality standards for products from other countries.

6.   How does processing of fruit and vegetables facilitate their preservation for a longer period of time?

Preservation of fruit, berries, and vegetables is achieved in the same way as canning them at home – by the processes of pasteurizing and sterilizing. Some products are supplemented with preservatives in order to protect them from microorganisms and to extent their duration. For example, for jams that contain sugar over 60% sugar is used as a preservative, in the same way how people do it at home. However, a range of products contain no preservatives in such a case they are labeled „No preservatives”.

7.   Why are E numbers added to the products?

E numbers or food additives have made it possible to expand the range of products and there are several reasons why they are added:

  • to preserve the food value of products;
  • to ensure the customers receive the necessary composition (especially, if products are meant for consumers with special requirements, for example, sugar diabetes, etc);
  • to extent their duration and stability of products, as well as to improve the quality of taste.

For every food additive there is a corresponding E number. For example, citric acid is E330, acetic acid is E260, ascorbic acid is E300, malic acid is E296, etc.

8.   What is the difference between preservatives and concentrates?

Preservatives are food additives that extend the duration of products and protect them from damaged caused by microorganisms.
Fruit juice concentrates are fruit juice that has its natural amount of water reduced, usually by evaporation. To make fruit juice out of the concentrate it needs to have so much water added as previously was taken away.

9.   Which are the favorite products among Spilva’s employees?

Spilva employees have stated that their favorite products are „Latvian countryside cucumbers”, „Tomato sols”, „Rosols mayonnaise”, „Breakfast mayonnaise”, „Penny bun mayonnaise”, „Pickled mushrooms”, „Russian mustard”, „Mustard with honey”, „Tomato juice”, „Apple juice”, „Dried tomatoes”, „Cucumber – mustard salad”, as well as sweet sauces.

10.  Is it possible to purchase Spilva’s products in wholesale?

Yes, it is possible to purchase Spilva’s products in wholesale by concluding a cooperation agreement with SIA Spilva. In addition, it is possible to purchase Spilva’s products both in wholesale and retail packs at the Spilva store at considerably lower prices than in other stores.

11.  How much of Spilva’s production is exported? Which are the main countries Spilva is exporting its products to?

12% of the total amount of Spilva’s products is exported.
This amount includes:

  • to Russia – 4%;
  • to Estonia – 4%;
  • to Finland – 2%;
  • to Lithuania – 2%.

12.  What are the most sought-after products of Spilva in other countries?

The top favorite products of Spilva in other countries are dressings, tomato sauce, and syrups, especially „Wild strawberries syrup”.

13.  Does Spilva produce everything in Latvia?

80% of Spilva’s products are produced in Latvia but 20% of its products are produced in other countries.

14.  Does Spilva buy fruit, berries, and vegetables from Latvian farmers?

Yes! During the high season Spilva buys fruit, berries, and vegetables from Latvian planters.

15.  What turnover does Spilva have?

The turnover of Spilva in 2008 was 13.8 million lats which meant 13% increase in comparison with 2007 when the turnover was 12.2 million lats. In 2008 Spilva paid LVL 1 493 352.00 in taxes.

16.  Who owns Spilva production unit?

Spilva is owned by Orkla ASA – an international group of companies with the central bureau in Norway.

17.  What investment projects has Spilva lately implemented?

In 2008, for example, Spilva invested a total of 3 million lats into the development of the company; in 2009 it invested 2.3 million lats. The most important investment project in 2008 was the construction and equipping of a new production building. And in July 1, 2009, the new logistics center of Spilva was opened. Other substantial investment projects in 2009 were the acquisition of Latplanta, as well as Spilva entering the juice market.

18.  Does Spilva get involved in charities?

Spilva takes part in supportive programs and events that care for the health and well-being of children. Spilva has been involved in several charity projects – it has supported Latvia Children’s Fund and SOS Children’s Village in the North Latvian town of Valmiera for several years, as well as got involved in the nation-wide charity initiative Adults for children’s hospital and donated to the charity campaign Angels over Latvia.
